The Judging System
Judging will take place from 11 to 13 October 2010. Wines will be grouped according to region, style, grape varieties, vintages and price points before the judging. Only grape varieties and vintages are revealed to the judges.
The scoring system is based on 100 points system. Only trophy, gold, silver or bronze medals are awarded. Not more than 10% of the total submission will be awarded a trophy or gold and not more than 45% of the total submission will be awarded a medal.

Wines awarded more than 85 points automatically qualify for the Trophy round of judging. The Top of the Reds and Top of the Whites will be chosen by all the judges, and are awarded gold trophies.
Assessment
The judges will be looking out for quality wines which express a good and appropriate flavour intensity, balance between the key elements in the wine and a good length and quality in aftertaste. Wines will additional wow factors would stand out further.

Distinguished Panel of Judges
The panel of judges consists of both international and regional judges. The former brings to the panel their international judging experience while the latter will be able to represent the expectations of the markets. The Asian judges comprise of Asian wine sommeliers, wine educators and wine journalists.
Heading the WSAA panel is wine guru John Chua, a well-known international wine judge and accredited lecturer for L'Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux for Asia.

John Chua

A wine veteran, John is a holder of numerous international wine certificates and an accredited lecturer for l’Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux (Bordeaux Wine School) for Southeast Asia.
Since 1991, John has trained 27 fully-qualified sommeliers to deliver the first-class service that is expected on board Singapore Airlines. He was also a consultant and trainer on wine and spirits for the cabin crew of various airlines. John has been involved in wine appreciation advisory in many prestigious country clubs.
In 1996, John was inducted into the International Wine Judging Panel and had been judging in international and regional wine competitions since. Some of the major competitions include:

John was named “Wine Personality of the Year” by The Wine Review in June 1994. He runs his own consulting firm - Chinelli Consultancy, and his objective now is to share his knowledge and hands-on experience on viniculture and local cuisines and make it a rewarding and an enriching experience for all. He is also the official sherry educator for Consejo Regulador of Sherry-Xeres-Jerez Y Manzanilla - Sanlucar de Barrameda. |

Singapore’s only Master of Wine and one of just 279 MWs in the world, Lisa Perrotti-Brown has been working in the wine trade for more than 19 years. Her career began in the UK as the manager of a wine bar in London. She progressed to various sales and marketing roles working for prestigious companies such as Corney & Barrow Wine Merchants and Veuve Clicquot Champagne house. In 2002, Lisa moved to Tokyo, Japan where she worked as a wine buyer for one of Japan’s top fine wine importers and a wine educator at Tokyo’s Academie du Vin. In 2008, she received The Madame Bollinger Medal for excellence in wine tasting.
Lisa currently resides in Singapore writing for Robert Parker’s website, eRobertParker.com, as the Asian wine correspondent and a reviewer for The Wine Advocate, covering the wines of Australia and New Zealand. She is also the Contributing Wine Editor for Cuisine & Wine Asia Magazine. As one of the world’s leading experts on fine wines and Asian wine markets, she frequently lectures upon these topics at conferences around the world. |

Nick Bulleid MW

Nick Bulleid is an independent wine industry consultant, providing assistance with winemaking, blending, valuation, marketing and vineyard development. He often works with grape-grower and winemaking organisations to assist them in improving their production and marketing methods. Additionally, he is often engaged as an expert witness in legal cases involving wine quality and technical issues.
Nick became the third Master of Wine in Australia, passing the examination at first attempt in 1992. He is a visiting Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, teaching wine evaluation. He also writes for industry journals, the Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine, and is currently editing and contributing to a textbook on practical winemaking, to be published by Wine Publishers, Adelaide.
He has judged at most capital city wine shows in Australia and New Zealand, many regional shows and the International Wine Challenge, London. From 2001 to 2003, he was chairman of judges of the New South Wales Wine Awards. For eight years, he chaired the Australian Society for Viticulture and Oenology’s Wine Show Committee, which coordinated a national approach to assist wine shows in managing growth, performance standards, auditing procedures and quality assurance.
Nick is a director and shareholder of Brokenwood Wines Pty Ltd and for five vintages shared the winemaking duties. He currently manages his own Hatherleigh vineyard in the chilly Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, where he tries to coax pinot noir to ripeness. |

Maria Isabel Mijares

Maria Isabel Mijares has been active in the wine business since the early 1970s, when she became the technical director of Bodega Palacio de Arganza in Villafrancia del Bierzo. After earning a degree in Chemistry and Physics from Madrid University, she graduated from the Oenology Institute of the University of Bordeaux. Since then, Isabel has been one of the most influential and prominent personalities in the modern Spanish Wine world.
She is and has been the president of numerous associations and councils in Spain and abroad. She is a wine consultant, oenologist, editor, and has been active in nearly all fields of the wine business. Isabel currently publishes a newspaper on wine, works as a consultant for the San Rafael region in Argentina, and is a jury member in various international contests. |

Li Demei

Li Demei is trained as an enologist at ENITA de Bordeaux, and has wine making experience at Chateau Palmer. He is currently teaching at Beijing Agriculture College, and is an invited teacher at ESA in Angers.
Demei is the first chief wine maker of the Chinese-French government-joint venture, Vineyards and Winery, and a member of the Wine Expert Committee of China and China Wine Standardization Committee, and a distinguished member of Sommeliers of Asia.
He has judged for the 7th Wine Review-Lian He Zao Bao wine challenge in Singapore, and the annual ICCCW (International Congress of Chinese Cuisine & Wine). Demei is also a wine columnist and consultant for Wine in China, Robb Report, Wine, Food Report, contributor for Wine Review, Chinese Bordeaux Guide, Food and Wine, Beijing Youth Daily etc. |

Sanjay Menon

Sanjay Menon of Sansula is responsible for pioneering the import, distribution and development of fine wines from around the world into India. He was the first to establish temperature control in custom bonded warehouse facilities and received a privately owned public bonded license, which was then hived off into another entity, Veritas Logistics Private Limited, which services top beverage service companies such as Pernod Ricard, Moet Hennessy and Alpha Duty Free.
Since 1999, Sanjay has been actively involved in educating the hospitality industry. Through Sansula, he has conducted numerous wine orientations and tutored training programmes to professionals from top hotels, restaurants as well as consumer groups such as YOP, WPO, etc.
Recognising the ever growing demand in education, Sanjay went on to establish the KBR School of Wine in 2007 to formalise the dissemination of education. KBR was the first institution to be accredited by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) of the UK, an international body that provides comprehensive and contemporary wine education programmes in the world.
Sanjay has been recognised by the Indian media and others in numerous odes to his efforts in developing the market for fine wines. The Decanter magazine recently named Sanjay Menon amongst 50 most influential wine personalities in the world in their ‘Decanter Power List’ for 2009. |

Roderick Wong

Roderick Wong’s passion for wines started in 1993. Since then, he has been involved in many areas of the wine industry as an importer, distributor, retailer, consultant, wine judge and educator. Trained by the Court of Master Sommelier in the United Kingdom, Roderick holds an Intermediate Certification with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (UK).
In 2003, he joined the Hilton Kuala Lumpur as their Chief Sommelier and was responsible for over 600 wine labels, and an on-premise inventory of over 15,000 bottles for the hotel’s F&B outlets. He is the founder and trainer of the Hilton Wine Academy, training over 500 F&B team members of the Hilton Group, and is the Regional Cluster Advisor Sommelier for some of the regional Hilton branches.
He is the founder and president of the first Sommelier Association of Malaysia (SOMLAY) and the organising Chairman for the Malaysia Best Sommelier Championship in 2009 and 2010. Roderick also organised the first Australian Wine Challenge of Malaysia in 2001 with the Malaysian Association of Australian Wine Importers (MAAWI).
He has judged for Flavours Magazine, Wine & Dine Magazine, and is the Chief Judge for the 2010 Prestige Wine Extravaganza by Prestige Magazine. He regularly represents Malaysia in International Sommelier Conferences in Spain, Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong. |

Pairach Intaput

Pairach Intaput has been in the food and beverage business for over twenty years. He was the winner of Sopexa Grand Prix du Sommelier, “The Best Sommelier of Thailand” in 1996, and awarded Commandeur de Gastronomie Française from Institut de Gastronomie Française.
Pairach is a wine columnist for newspapers and wine magazines, and has conducted hundreds of wine tastings/ dinners and wine classes for independent wine clubs, hotels, restaurants, universities and John Robert Powers (Thailand). He has also established a wine school in his restaurant (Vintage 21) in Bangkok, Thailand.
Since 2001, Pairach has been judging for FBAT International Wine Challenge at IFHS Bangkok, and he recently judged at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition 2009. He has been also been appointed by Thai Airways International, to be part of their distinguished panel in selecting wine for onboard consumption, tasting and judging 500-700 wines twice a year. |
